Preserving National Heritage

Earlier this year, we took an epic road trip from Colombia's capital, Bogotà, to the very famous town of Barichara in the region of Santander.

We fell in love with the town, but what's really special about this place is that it is home to the Fundación Escuela Taller - a non-profit organization established in 2007 that aims to preserve Colombia's national heritage through teaching local communities traditional crafts, art forms and artisan methods. These include pottery, weaving, paper-making, and even traditional gastronomy.

Where Our Tote Bags Are Made

The Foundation school is in the town center - a stunning, open plan house made up of various annexes that are equipped with workshops, tools and materials, including mills, traditional paper presses, and more. Within the house, there is also a beautiful store front that doubles up as an exhibition space, where the Foundation helps the students sell their finished artisanal products.

It's an inspirational environment to be in - the team at the Foundation is so passionate about artisanry and the love for their students is undeniable. They're encouraging and everything they do is geared towards empowering the local people. Their holistic approach to education, community, art and tradition has thus far proven to be very successful, as they continue to provide a platform for individuals to succeed at making a living for themselves and their families through learned crafts.

The Fique Collection Tote Bags

Our Fique Collection Tote Bags are each made by students in the Foundation who are mastering the art of weaving fique (a natural fiber that is grown in the Andean region of Colombia). Our tote bags are all made using traditional methods and all finishing touches are made by hand. We only have ONE of each bag - truly one-of-a-kind products straight from Colombia.

We will be working with the Foundation more closely over the coming year and with your purchase of each tote bag, we will be able to continue supporting the students and the wonderful work the Foundation is doing for them.
