Cork is the bark of the cork oak tree, and it is certainly one of the most fascinating materials. For nearly 3,000 years, the cultivation of cork oak trees has proven to be one of the planet's most sustainable and environmentally responsible types of farming. Harvesting cork doesn’t harm the tree itself, because only the bark is extracted. It regrows within a couple of years and can then be harvested again. Cork forests support high levels of biodiversity and foster a great diversity of plants and endangered species. Its growth reduces up to two times the amount of CO2 compared to other trees. Besides, it offers fair remuneration and a high employment rate to farmers and workers. Cork is reusable, fire and water resistant, insulating and biodegradable. ono products use the highest quality cork available. This 'cork leather' provides ono products a unique flexibility and softness, and this combination of cork and tencel© is the only one of its kind in the world.
Tencel©, or lyocell, is an incredibly strong and functional fiber made from wood pulp of mostly eucalyptus trees. The trees are grown in sustainable forest plantations and, since forest land is not suitable for agriculture, it does not compete with food production. The tencel© used is certified by the European eco-label OEKO-TEX®. The material is soft, light, absorbent, durable, breathable and naturally antibacterial. The tencel© fiber production itself is eco-friendly through an innovative closed-loop process using a non-toxic solvent. The cultivation of the eucalyptus trees is very efficient and does not need additional water irrigation. Compared to other plants, the extracted amount per unit of land is extraordinarily high. Apart from all these advantages, it is fully biodegradable, and simply one of the most sustainable natural fibers available. Tencel is used as a backing material for the cork, which provides each product its flexible structure.
Bamboo is simply stunning. Bamboo is a grass, which can grow in most climates and environments without the application of chemicals and pesticides. Through its growth it reduces five times more CO2 than comparable plants and can be re-harvested continually without damaging the surrounding environment. It is capable of growing up to one meter a day, so you can literally watch it grow! The material is antibacterial, highly absorbent, hypo-allergenic, compostable and incredibly comfortable to wear. To assure the highest possible standards for both, humans and nature, ono exclusively uses natural bamboo for the lining of its products. By using bamboo, each product is highly functional and incredibly comfortable, whilst simultaneously helping to save rainforests, eliminating waste, and lowering carbon emissions - all at once!
Organic cotton is produced from non-genetically modified plants, that are grown without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers or pesticides. The eco-friendly processing does not compromise the workers’ health, which is a widespread problem in the production of non-organic cotton. It helps to reduce the use of water and electricity and significantly assists in minimizing toxic runoff. People with allergies and chemical sensitivity especially benefit from using organic cotton, as conventional cotton may retain harmful toxic residues. But even if you don't have sensitive skin, organic cotton is healthier and just feels better on the skin. Unlike most businesses in the fashion industry, all sewing threads used in ono products are made from organic cotton making it biodegradable. Most of the sewing threads used in accessories and clothes today are made from polyester or other synthetic fibers. Choosing only natural materials, ono applies this ideal to its thread too, which is naturally dyed with dye made from plant matter.
To produce responsibly and sustainably, ono uses reclaimed teak for its buttons. ono uses wooden structures that are waste materials from the manufacturing process of furniture or other things. The reclaimed wood would not have any purpose, mainly due to its size. Still it’s perfectly usable for small pieces, like buttons. Each of ono’s buttons is cut carefully out of a wooden structure of a high quality and beautiful teak wood piece – matching the design of ono's logo. Each individual piece is chosen and manufactured with care and lots of love for detail. Teak itself is a fast-growing tree cultivated in Indonesia and, being grown on plantations, it is considered a renewable resource. The wood is not only beautiful, but also highly durable and water resistant.

It is part of the ono philosophy to completely refuse animal products or artificial fibers to combine natural beauty and quality in its purest form that uphold our values of being eco-friendly, vegan and fair.
"Imagine a world in which fashion is crafted and enjoyed with passion. A world that preserves nature through the creation of beautiful products. Imagine a world in unison. Crafting a new generation of outstanding fully ethical products that combine style and beauty while being natural, vegan and fairly produced. That’s what we stand for.
Three years ago we first heard about the ‘cause no harm’ philosophy. Every year fashion creates incredible beauty but has also become the second most polluting industry worldwide, with millions of garment workers living in poverty. Inspired by this simple yet profound philosophy, we decided to make a change: celebrating beauty and creating beautiful experiences for everyone involved.
ono’s story started in 2013, with the initial idea conceived by owner and founder Bernadette Bodenmueller during her time living and working in Bali. Inspired by her fascination of incredible lush nature, the meticulous craftsmanship she found around her, the natural elegance of the Balinese women and a profound and simple theory of ‘cause no harm’, Bernadette decided to create products that combine it all: beauty, elegance, art, natural materials, quality, durability and a fully sustainable approach for people and the planet. And so was ono born."
